If you’re in the food and beverage industry, your packaging is about to get a makeover. Health Canada has introduced a new mandatory Front-of-Package (FOP) nutrition symbol for foods high in saturated fat, sugars, and/or sodium.
As your printing partner, we know that a "regulatory change" usually means one thing: re-designing plates and updating files. We want to make sure your brand stays compliant without losing its shelf appeal.
Here is everything you need to know about getting these symbols onto your packaging accurately and efficiently.

What is the FOP Nutrition Symbol?
The symbol is a black-and-white magnifying glass icon designed to help consumers make quick, informed choices. If your product exceeds a certain threshold of the "big three" (Saturated Fat, Sugars, or Sodium), you are legally required to display this mark.
Key Specifications for Print and Design
Compliance isn't just about "putting the sticker on." Health Canada has very specific rules regarding the symbol’s appearance. If these aren't met, you risk a recall or a forced re-print.
Color & Contrast: The symbol must be black and white. It cannot be customized to match your brand’s color palette.
Size Requirements: The size of the symbol is proportional to the Principal Display Surface (PDS) of your package. The larger the box, the larger the symbol.
Placement: It must appear on the front of the package (the main panel) and usually sits in the upper right-hand corner.
Language: Symbols must be bilingual (English and French). Depending on your market, you can use two separate symbols or one combined bilingual version.
The Timeline: When do you need to act?
The deadline for all prepackaged foods to display the symbol is January 1, 2026.
While that might feel like a distant date, we recommend starting the transition now. Updating your digital files and proofing them during your next scheduled print run will save you from a "compliance crunch" later.
